30 before 30: 30 {new} things i plan to do in the year before i turn 30. December 21, 2012

Filed under: milk chocolate — beautynobility @ 12:19 pm

i told y’all this would take me forever when i started… and continued…and continued.

thankfully, i’m finished now! below, see the full list of this list of 30 before 30: 30 {new} things i plan to do in the year before i turn 30.

 1. run a 5k. i know, i know. 5ks are sooo passe, get on the 1/2 marathon level, Cha! but, um, i hate to exercise. and i get tired. and this is all about baby steps, okay! i want to go into 30 knowing i conquered one of my big things. who knows, maybe i’ll become an exercise maven and be all, “when i’m 30 i’m running a half marathon!” okay, we can all stop laughing now.

2. go on a cruise. i hear these are awesome. every friend who’s gone on a cruise comes back raving about how great it is to have unlimited food. LOL. so, this is something i want to do before 30.

3. go on vacation alone. this could be the cruise (see #2 – though i feel like that would be more fun with friend(s).). but i want to go away, by my lonesome. take some time for me. could be a small trip, just up to niagara or over the border, or a big(ger) vacay, but it has to meet two features: none of my friends can live there, and i need to be alone.

4. visit all my friends. i have (close) friends scattered across the US. Alabama (what up LJ?!), Atlanta, Cali, the DMV, etc. now, this may not sound like a big deal to some, but i haven’t actually seen all my (close) friends in the same year in a really long time. the closest was probably this past year, when i was able to spend an afternoon with the bestest marrieds when i had a pitstop in B-Ham, and my girls(-1) were able to come to my graduation. i want to visit all my friends in the same year. see them all, including the ones that live around the corner and up the road, while still 29.

5. take vocal lessons. i love music. i love to sing. LOVE LOVE LOVE worship. i want to actually take some time and craft my voice to meet one of my favourite things to do.

6. record a song. so, a couple years ago, this was on my list of things i wanted to do, but then, i just wanted to be on a recording. and it totally happened in the most unexpected of ways – a random person at church in LA asked me to do BGVs. it was great! but i want to record something of my own. maybe not an original, but yes.

7. take a songwriting class. i like music (see 5, 6). i have a heart for well written songs – in both message and music. i want to learn about writing music, and doing so from a biblical perspective. hmmm… perhaps go to Deeper? ideas, ideas.

8. eat five things i’ve never tried before. this may be hard, just because there are several things i don’t eat. i keep thinking i’m not picky, but then i go somewhere or someone tries to make me food and i start listing all the things i don’t eat. but i love food, so this one should be fun to try.

9. get a custom made dress. i mean, preferably a wedding dress… j/k. i cannot see myself married before i turn 30 (though, hey, if you’re interested, call me, maybe?). but seriously, a custom made, gorgeous purple dress? yes.

10. go to the ballet. i’ve seen the Alvin Ailey Dance Company live, but never been to an actual “ballet.” and i love dance, so this could be sooo fun.

11. own a real pearl strand necklace. i love pearls. (this would also make a great present…)

12. go sailing. i think it could be fun to do a day trip sailing somewhere – with people who actually know how to sail. LOL.

13. learn conversational spanish. Spanish is quickly becoming a language that is necessary for the practice of law – and travel, i suppose. i know conversational french, but i’d love to learn spanish.

14. take bellydancing/pole-dancing classes. okay. these just look fun. one of my good friends from law school took pole-dancing classes during our final year, and she raved about them! she said they’re a great workout, and a fun self-esteem boost. anyone want to join me?

15. visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. i’ve been to NYC several times, and never done this. BUT this museum is always the site of some meet cute in movies, or the fun place, etc. must do.

16. climb the Statue of Liberty. again, i’ve never actually done this, despite visiting NYC. must correct and fulfill my ‘tourist’ requirements.

17. learn to play pool. because in all the movies, the main characters have some sort of cutesy pool match – so why not?

18. allow myself to make mistakes. i’m a perfectionist. i’m really, really hard on myself when i mess something up – and this isn’t an attitude i want to carry forward in my life. because, seriously, i do not save myself. it’s grace that saves me, and grace i need to accept when i mess up.

19. blog every day for a month. i’ve seen a lot of people (on twitter, of course) do a #30in30 challenge, and always thought it would be fun – but wouldn’t push myself to do so. but it seems to build discipline, and allow for both silly and thought provoking posts.

20. learn to say ‘no’ without feeling guilty. i tend to overcommit myself, and it’s normally because i feel badly denying someone when they make a request of me. i used to feel flattered, or wanted. now i just get tired, but still can’t refuse. before i’m 30, i’ll learn to politely and respectfully decline requests that i can’t meet – and not feel guilty about it.

21. invest in the stock market. i need to get my financial life together and be a grown up with my funds. part of that, i guess, should be investing? i don’t know, it just sounds so ‘adult’ to check stocks and have money in the market.

22. go to a Broadway play. i’ve been to live theatre, but there’s something about broadway, isn’t there? i need to make this a musical, and then i’ll be super happy.

23. go to a session of SCOTUS. i’m (almost) a lawyer. (because i have to be sworn in – not about to get hit with that unauthorized practice of law!). it seems only appropriate that i would sit at a session of SCOTUS.

24. travel to three states i haven’t seen before. i think (of states i would ACTUALLY visit), i have left louisiana, new hampshire, rhode island, idaho (if TF or AS are there), maine, mississippi, vermont, and hawaii. road trip(s) anyone?

25. ask out a crush. i know, i know, we now live in the era of empowerment! ask out who ever you want! take charge, roar, roar. eh – i don’t really see this happening, but MSJ convinced me to put it on. i should probably make 26 “find a crush” LOL.

26. learn the basics of my car. i have been terrified a couple times when a light came on in my car and i had no idea what to do. thankfully, i discovered after i called my friend JLA that it was just my windshield washer fluid for one of the lights. yes, you may mock me now – he does and i suspect will continue to, until the day i die. the other was my oil, and my uncle talked me down from the land of fear. i got a flat tire a couple years ago, and woke up all my friends with husbands to ask if i could borrow their men to change my tire. clearly, i need to learn enough that i don’t turn into a disgraceful wreck when something appears to be ‘off’ with my Bella Negra.

27. take drum lessons. or guitar. but i’m leaning towards the drums. a) i think they’re cool. b) i could let out some serious aggression. c) how amazing would it be to be all fly in a jeans/blazer/fly tank combo with killer heels, say ‘excuse me’ to a friend/associate/date (?), switch from heels to flats, and KILL ON THE DRUMS? yeah… go with my dream here.

28. choose a word or phrase and actively work to never use it again. i got this from the esquire website, but it got me thinking. i’m sure there are phrases that my friends/family/acquaintances would tell me to retire. and, i’m sure there are words for which i know suitably intelligent replacements. hmmm… time to elevate my vocabulary.

29. get a good massage. hopefully, at least once a month. because, yo, i’m tight all the time. and my body, it doth hurt.

30. love harder. laugh louder. dance faster. spin wilder. stop caring so much about what other people think when i do those things.

29 should be an adventure – if i actually do these things! keep accountable, friends and Chocolatiers. And join me on some of these, if you choose. I’ll keep you updated on the good times as they roll.

22 days to 29 – and now I’m really excited!

almost there… [30 before 30] December 17, 2012

i told y’all this would take me forever when i began this list of 30 before 30: 30 {new} things i plan to do in the year before i turn 30.

after my plea for help, one of my very good friends (who was actually one of the catalysts for this) sent me some ideas. some, i loved. some… yeah.

1. run a 5k. i know, i know. 5ks are sooo passe, get on the 1/2 marathon level, Cha! but, um, i hate to exercise. and i get tired. and this is all about baby steps, okay! i want to go into 30 knowing i conquered one of my big things. who knows, maybe i’ll become an exercise maven and be all, “when i’m 30 i’m running a half marathon!” okay, we can all stop laughing now.

okay. i’ve got 24. so, 6 left. help me out – what are 6 other things i should do before i turn 30?

this is hard [30 before 30] December 4, 2012

Filed under: milk chocolate — beautynobility @ 9:29 am

a couple weeks ago, i began this bright idea to do a list of 30 before 30: 30 {new} things i plan to do in the year before i turn 30.

um yeah. i’m having a really hard time coming up with more things. i guess it’s a good problem of sorts; everything i’d think of, i’ve already done. dance lessons? check! swimming? check! regular exercise/eating? check! get a budget? check! live by the budget… semi-check. LOL.

but for real. i’m having a hard time coming up with “new” things, so bear with me a little bit longer.

1. run a 5k. i know, i know. 5ks are sooo passe, get on the 1/2 marathon level, Cha! but, um, i hate to exercise. and i get tired. and this is all about baby steps, okay! i want to go into 30 knowing i conquered one of my big things. who knows, maybe i’ll become an exercise maven and be all, “when i’m 30 i’m running a half marathon!” okay, we can all stop laughing now.

alright y’all. i’m at 7 – i need another 23. PLEASE, ideas!!!

41 days December 2, 2012

Filed under: milk chocolate — beautynobility @ 5:39 pm

I find myself in a weird place. Introspective, reflective. Satisfied, dissatisfied. Happy, inexplicably sad. Wondering. Hopeful and tired of hoping. Embracing destiny. Taking naps.

Tired of people telling me to wait. Why? What am I waiting for? Why should I keep waiting? Why can’t I just live? Love?

In 41 days I’ll be 29. The age feels weird. Not in a “I should have accomplished so much by now” way, but in “where are things going” way. I’m not content to wait for life to happen. I’m not content to wait on doing, living, being until some magical thing/relationship/life happens. I’m turning 29: I want to live it. To embrace it, to be it.

If I never go on another date. Never get married, have kids, become a judge, change the lives of everyone I meet – I want to live. Love. Be. I want my life to be meaningful, worthwhile, important. And I can’t wait on something to happen to have and live that.

Weird place.
